By noon, a pale wall can lose its color and later find another one in the afternoon. The paint has stayed the same. Light reflected from the floor, the sky, and whatever stands outside the window keeps changing what reaches the eye. In a familiar room, these shifts are easy to miss until something interrupts them. A curtain is left open. A chair stands where a strip of sunlight usually falls. Suddenly a surface that seemed flat has a grain, and the gap between two objects has a shape of its own.

A photograph holds one of these arrangements. Waiting a little longer may produce a quieter version, with less contrast and more detail in the shadow. Or the light may leave altogether. There is no single moment that explains the room for the rest of the day.

The useful habit is staying long enough to see an assumption change. The corner thought too dark becomes the gentlest part of the image. The brightest wall loses interest. A line of warmth moves across the floor, passes under the chair, and continues without it.
