# Slow Sunday

Onion softens at the bottom of a pot. The first sharp smell becomes sweeter, tomato darkens at the edges, and the room begins keeping time through changes that can be noticed without looking at a clock. There is enough waiting in a pot of rice for other things to happen nearby. A cloth is spread out. Someone comes back through the doorway. A chair is pulled away from the table and left at an angle, marking a place before the meal is ready.

A slow meal gathers people at different speeds. One person arrives hungry; another is still finishing a conversation. Serving from the center of the table makes a little room for this unevenness. A bowl can travel, pause, and continue without everyone needing to begin together.

The photographs hold their own pauses. A group shares a stretch of space, a figure waits in changing light, fabric settles around a body. Their connection to the table is a matter of pace: enough time remains in the frame for another person to enter it.

Afterwards, the day keeps some of that shape. A covered dish waits for somebody who will eat later. Water stands in the pot, loosening what has caught at the bottom. The meal is over, but there are still a few easy tasks that allow the afternoon to begin gradually.
